the exotic jardin
         of Georges Delaselle

In 1897, Georges Delaselle, a Parisian insurer, fell under the spell of Batz Island and decided to create a small oasis. He bought some pieces of land at Penn ar C’hleguer Point where he planted Lambert cypresses, Holm oaks and Austrian black pines in order to protect the site from wind and spray. He dug basins in the dune to shelter the plants. He also discovered an important prehistoric site.

In 1937, having exhausted his resources and money, he sold the property. The garden became neglected.

In 1987 a team of volunteers belonging to the association “the friends of G. Delaselle garden” decided to restore it. Today, as a property of the Littoral Conservation Area, the garden has more than 2000 species from all continents among which is an exceptional collection of palm trees.
